Getting There
Take KTX from Seoul to Andong Station (2 hours 20 min via Dongdaegu, ₩38,000-48,000). Direct buses also run from Seoul's Dong Seoul Terminal (3.5 hours, ₩17,800).

If Seoul represents Korea’s future and Gyeongju its ancient history, Andong carries something rarer — the unbroken living thread of Korean Confucian culture. This city in the mountains of North Gyeongsang Province has resisted modernization more stubbornly than any other Korean city, and the results are extraordinary: UNESCO World Heritage folk villages, 500-year-old Confucian academies, and a mask dance tradition that predates writing.

We came for two days and found ourselves extending to three. Hahoe Village in the morning mist, with smoke rising from cooking fires in hundred-year-old hanok, is the closest we’ve come in Korea to genuine time travel. The braised chicken at Jjimdak Street was, without argument, one of the best meals of the entire trip.

Getting Around Andong

Andong is small enough that taxis are the primary way to get between sites. From the city center, Hahoe Folk Village is 25km west (₩15,000-18,000 by taxi). Dosan Seowon is 25km north (₩15,000-18,000). Local buses serve both destinations but require patience with infrequent schedules. A taxi for the full day (4-5 destinations) runs ₩60,000-80,000 — often the best value.

Things to Do in Andong

Hahoe Folk Village is the most authentic traditional village in Korea — a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the Ryu clan has lived for 600 unbroken years. The S-bend of the Nakdonggang River wraps around the village on three sides, creating a natural protected environment. The traditional thatched-roof and tile-roof houses are lived in year-round. The Hahoe Byeolsingut mask dance performance (Wednesday-Sunday, 2 PM) is unforgettable. ₩5,000/adult.

Dosan Seowon is the Confucian academy founded by Yi Hwang (Toegye, 1501-1570) — Korea’s most revered Confucian scholar, whose face is on the ₩1,000 banknote. The academy became the center of Neo-Confucian scholarship in Korea and was the training ground for generations of government officials. The setting in a mountain valley above the Nakdonggang River is serene. ₩1,500/adult.

Andong Mask Dance Festival (late September to early October) draws 1-2 million visitors annually. The traditional Hahoe mask dances (byeolsingut talnori) satirized corrupt officials and are among the earliest forms of Korean theater. Twelve mask types, each representing a social class. Free and paid performances.

Bongjeongsa Temple is 50km from Andong but worth the trip — the main hall (Geungnakjeon) is the oldest wooden structure surviving in Korea, built in the 9th century. The mountain forest setting adds considerably to the atmosphere. ₩3,000/adult.

Andong Soju — Korea’s strongest and most traditional spirit (45% ABV) originated in Andong. The Andong Soju Museum near the city center explains the history; you can taste and buy the original product. Don’t confuse this with the watered-down green-bottle soju from convenience stores — this is the real thing.

Where to Eat in Andong

Jjimdak Street (Gu Shijang) — The original alley of jjimdak restaurants in the old market area. Multiple restaurants serve virtually identical versions — all good. A pot serves 2-3 people and costs ₩28,000-35,000. Order medium spice if uncertain; Korean medium is legitimately hot for most foreigners.

Heotjesabap — A unique Andong specialty: food served on white paper and eaten without chopsticks in the style of traditional ancestral rite meals. Experiencing this traditional serving format is worth seeking out at restaurants that specialize in it.

Andong Soju Tasting — Visit the Andong Soju & Traditional Food Museum for a tasting of the 45% ABV original. ₩3,000 for a tasting session.

Where to Stay in Andong

Andong Park Hotel (Mid-range) — ₩85,000-100,000/night. The best hotel in the city, centrally located with comfortable rooms and good service.

Hahoe Village Guesthouses (Unique/Budget) — ₩50,000-80,000/night. Converted traditional hanok houses within the UNESCO village itself. Wake up to roosters and wood smoke. Book early — only a handful of rooms.

Grand Hotel Andong (Budget-Mid) — ₩60,000-75,000/night. Functional and clean near the bus terminal.

Scott’s Pro Tips for Andong

1. Logistics & Getting There: The easiest route from Seoul is the KTX to Dongdaegu, then connect to Andong (total 2 hrs 20 min). Alternatively, direct express buses from Dong Seoul Terminal run every hour (3.5 hrs, ₩17,800). From Busan, buses are 2.5 hours (₩14,100).

2. Best Time to Visit: October for the Mask Dance Festival (book accommodation months in advance during festival week). May for pleasant weather and minimal crowds. Andong can be brutally hot in August (35°C+) — avoid unless you have a particular reason.

3. Getting Around: Taxis are the most practical way to reach Hahoe and Dosan Seowon. Negotiate a full-day price (₩70,000-80,000) for multiple sites. City buses work but require significant time flexibility.

4. Money & ATMs: Andong is a smaller city. Global ATMs at the train/bus terminal area and at major banks. Cash is preferred at Hahoe village guesthouses. Keep ₩50,000-80,000 in cash per day.

5. Safety & Health: Andong is extremely safe. Andong Medical Center is the main facility. Emergency: 112/119.

6. Packing Essentials: Comfortable walking shoes for Hahoe’s unpaved paths. A light jacket even in May — Andong’s mountain setting makes evenings cool. An umbrella for unpredictable mountain weather.

7. Local Culture & Etiquette: Andong is the most Confucian city in Korea — formal manners, elder respect, and social hierarchy are expressed more visibly here than in Seoul. In Hahoe village, ask before photographing residents (particularly elders). The mask dance satire traditionally mocked monks and aristocrats — understanding this context makes the performance much richer.
